Unforgettable Family Reunion - Where BBQ and Fun Collide!

Here, at B&M Catering, we always love bringing families together over mouthwatering food. But, we know – it’s not always about the food….. There’s gotta be some other fun stuff to do when the family’s all together.

So, today, we are sharing some fantastic ideas for a fun-filled family reunion weekend for a memorable event.

Any successful family reunion is going to need to have family-friendly activities that cater to all ages.

Here are some of our favorite outdoor family reunion activities:

Water Balloon Toss

This one’s particularly great for hot summer days.
First, divide players into teams of two. Team members are going to stand opposite of each other to toss a water balloon back and forth. They’ll gradually widen the space between them.
The last team with a balloon intact wins the game!

Paper Airplane Competition

This activity can get pretty competitive, especially if you let your family know ahead of time so they can do some research and perfect their designs.
Make paper available. See who can create a family record. You can decide if you are going to allow teamwork or single engineers.
Go ahead – create rules or make it a free-for-all.
The sky’s the limit when it comes to paper airplanes.

Egg Race

Grab some spoons and eggs (hard-boiled or plastic) and set up a relay race of the s-l-o-w-e-s-t kind. Each team member will carry their egg on a spoon from the starting point to a turnaround point and back again. Then, the egg is passed to a teammate (from spoon to spoon) who takes their turn. The first team to complete the course wins the game.  Another version of this game may use a lemon or a lime instead of an egg.

Frisbee Golf

Frisbee golf is similar to traditional ball golf. Instead of using a ball and club. A Frisbee is thrown towards a basket or a bucket which is going to serve as the hole. After the first throw, the Frisbee gets thrown again from where it landed. Scoring is kept by counting the number of throws it takes to make the Frisbee land in the basket.  This game is played individually or in teams.

Here are other outdoor reunion activities to consider.

  • Cornhole
  • Sack races
  • Tug-of-war
  • Water balloon toss
  • Scavenger hunt (Make it even more exciting by incorporating personalized clues and riddles related to your family’s history and inside jokes.)
  • Hula hoop competition
  • Spike ball
  • Sack race
  • Volleyball or badminton
  • Three-legged race
  • Balloon-between-the-knees race
  • Obstacle course
  • No-hands watermelon challenge (watch out – this could get messy)
  • Watermelon seed spitting contest
  • Giant Jenga
  • Kan Jam
  • Ring toss or horseshoes

Headed indoors? No worries, these family reunion activities can be enjoyed indoors or outdoors:

Telephone Game

A great icebreaker. This game can be played by dividing your players into smaller teams. Get everyone to sit in a line. The first player of each team will whisper a fact about themself to the next person in the team. The other team person will then pass that message on to the next person, and so on. The last person on that team will say out loud what they think the original fact was.  The team that gets the initial message mostly correct at the end is the winner.

Baby Picture Game

Family members are asked to bring copies of their baby pictures. Their name was added to the back of the photo, of the reunion. The pictures are added to a bulletin board with the numbers below. Each family member will write down who they think is in each of the photos.  The player who recognizes the most photos wins the game.

Family Trivia or Bingo

Here’s another great family reunion icebreaker.

You will need sheets of paper and pens for all players. Make a grid on the paper and write different facts/ideas in each box. For example, you can write, “The first member who went to university,” “The eldest cousin of the family,” “A family member who loves ice cream,” and so on. You might decide to copy them on all the sheets or write different ones on each sheet. Ask the family to fill out the boxes within a certain time.  Of course, given extra time, players can go around the room talking to everyone to learn more about each other.  Whoever ends up filling the most boxes during that time is the winner

Here are more activities that can be played indoors:

  • Family talent show
  • Craft tables
  • Charades
  • Two truths and one lie
  • Bingo
  • Mad Libs
  • Paper airplane competition
  • Board games
  • Story time (have true stories ready ahead of time about another family member)

Don’t Forget to Capture the Memories

Try this: Set up a specific “Memory Zone” area with props, a photo booth, and a DIY video/selfie station. Encourage your family members to take photos and record videos to share their memories and stories and to share their favorite moments and memories from the weekend

That’s because it has a bit of everything.

Folks seem to love starting off with the southwest salad made with our widely acclaimed cornbread croutons.  The main part of the meal may include BBQ baby back ribs, garlic herb chicken breast, and sweet Italian sausage or grilled chourico with peppers and onions. Sides may include red bliss potato salad, our homemade cole slaw, or our Boston baked beans.  No one can resist our cornbread or the chocolate dirt dessert.  (We promise)

And for our vegetarian guests, we’ve got delightful vegetarian options like grilled portabella mushrooms, Thai noodle salad, and other pasta salad options that are equally scrumptious.
