Celebrating Thanksgiving: Three Ways to Destress

  • Posted on: 10 November 2020

Thanksgiving this year may look a little different, but it is still a perfect time to give thanks and connect with close family and friends.

The traditions of previous years may be altered, but you can still enjoy this season of gratitude.

Thanksgiving stress free tips

We are happy to share some suggestions to keep the spirit of Thanksgiving alive and thriving:

  • Free Yourself from the Kitchen: If you’re looking to focus your energy on fully connecting with the small circle of family around the table, try ordering out for your full Thanksgiving feast. B&M offers two excellent full Thanksgiving meal options that will keep you free from the kitchen and allow the normal “is the turkey overdone” stress to wither away. Want to still make your own turkey, but not feeling the side dish prep? Ordering all your family’s favorite traditional dishes is another stress-free option that allows you to focus on the true spirit of Thanksgiving.
  • Scaling Back: No doubt, most guest lists are going to look a little shorter this year. Consider this a perfect opportunity to think outside the box with your Thanksgiving menu. Although the traditional turkey day feast can be ready to roll thanks to B&M, this year can be a time to dial in your menu and make things cozier. Cooking up drumsticks or a turkey breast instead of a full bird can help you scale back and keep things simple by adding a few delicious and different sides like bacon-wrapped scallops or stuffed mushrooms.
  • Give Back to Those in Need: Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude for what you have and for those around you, but it can act as a time to give back to others too. With 2020 being a hard hit for so many in our communities, donating to organizations that support those without can be extremely powerful. Know of a specific family in need this Thanksgiving that you would like to help? You can donate a B&M Gift Card. The spirit of Thanksgiving is one that has expanded in meaning thanks to 2020, and supporting others is a great way to make peace with a stressful year.

History of the New England Clambake!

  • Posted on: 18 October 2020
  • By: Brian and Mick

We all know that the New England Clambake is a tried and true favorite of our area (and our customers' favorite!). But how many of us actually KNOW the origins of the legendary and long-loved "bake"?

New England clambake

This Native American tradition of cooking clams and lobsters in sand pits dates back to 2000 years and has become notoriously popular. The original practice has since transformed. Now the classically know "New England Clambake" dish consists of lobsters, mussels, crabs, and clams all still steamed in sandpits over several seaweed layers.

The historical practice of digging up sand pits stems from the Natives, who did not own cooking pots, so it is the earth that was used as a cooking vessel instead. Pretty clever! As the clambake dish evolved, it isn't uncommon to see vegetables added too. Veggies like corn, onions, and carrots now get to making starring appearances in the bake.

As the end of the 19th century rolled around, clambakes became a noted American tradition. Although most commonly prepared for festive events in New England, B&M makes it possible to enjoy an intimate little Clambake for two without the fanfare of a larger celebration.

This history is a beautiful reminder of our connection between the earth and sea and is not only delicious, but a true tradition of our area.

Our friend, Kate P. and her son sure did enjoy their DIY clambake.  Read about it here.

Celebrating Outside: Planning a Cozy Autumnal Gathering

There is no denying that things are looking a little different this Fall. Still, for those interested in gathering outside in the crisp Autumn air, we have some helpful suggestions (including the food, of course!) to make your get-together memorable! With winter just around the corner, now is the time to take advantage of gathering with those you love while the temps are still mild.

Here are some suggestions to transform your outside space, complete with menu selections that support the feel of the season:

  • Light the Space: Strings of lights can be all it takes to transform your backyard from a simple yard into an intimate space to gather. As an alternative to burning lanterns, you can also try placing string lights into glass jars and place on tables or walkways.
  • Decorate with fall décor. Autumn-themed décor or seasonal plants will help bring that Fall vibe alive. Containers of mums in an array of colors are an easy addition with big impact!
  • Add warmth. After all, it's New England, so as the sun sets, make an outdoor lounge spot feel cozy with a portable outdoor fire pit for your patio. Spacing seating smartly around the firepit will allow for a great conversation area while being mindful of necessary distancing.
  • Comfort Food for the Win: Choosing curbside menu options that fit the feel of your small gathering couldn't be easier. Selections like our BBQ Chicken & Pig meal offer roasted pork and chicken options paired with cowboy beans, cornbread, and homemade applesauce. Add on our cheesy good mac n' cheese to round out a deliciously good gathering!

We have no doubt that your guests will feel the love (and warmth!) once they enter your Autumn themed backyard.

Curious about our other curbside menu options for your outdoor gathering and want to place an order? Hop on over to our Curbside Menu section!

Comfort Foods for the Fall!

With Summer’s quick departure and Autumn’s swift arrival, it is easy to feel like the opportunities to gather and celebrate are waning. Luckily, we are here to remind you that Fall is a fantastic time to welcome the cozier months ahead and find ways to celebrate the upcoming season together.

Here are some of our delicious comfort foods and menu-planning suggestions for your Fall events:

  • Aim for Heartier Foods. Some of our favorite comfort foods for the cooler months include our Chicken Marsala, Lasagna, Roast Stuffed Pork, Shepherd’s Pie, and even Baked Scrod. A traditional favorite is our Mac N’ Cheese, which we offer in several unique varieties like Buffalo Chicken, Salsa con Queso and a New England favorite...lobster!
  • Healthy Options Work Too. No one said you could only have higher-calorie comfort foods; there is room for veggies or a fresh salad too! Pair your chosen entrée(s) with a veggie side dish like Candied Baby Carrots, Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon, or the Harvest Salad – a fall and winter favorite packed with walnuts, cranberries, crumbled bleu cheese, mixed greens, onions, cucumbers, and peppers with an apple cider vinaigrette. Delicious! Browse all of our a la carte menu items to find something that catches your eye (and appetite)!
  • Get Your Soup On! Soup can be an excellent option to incorporate into your menu during the approaching New England winters. Guinness Beef Stew, Chicken & Sausage Gumbo, and Roasted Corn & Butternut Squash Bisque all make for cozy menu add-ons! We even provide Oyster crackers, disposable bowls, and spoons
  • Family Style All the Way. You can keep things simple by choosing from one of our fixed menu options, like our Old-Fashioned Family Dinner Buffets! The Roast Dinner – with Roasted Turkey or Pork, Whipped Potatoes, Stuffing, Gravy, Cranberry Sauce, Butternut Squash, and Rolls & Butter is always a tummy-filling crowd-pleaser.
  • Craving Italian? Our Little Italy menu includes Ziti, Italian Meatballs, Sweet Italian Sausage, Chicken or Eggplant Parmesan, Fresh Garden Salad, and Italian Bread & Butter, has all the fixings you could ever crave!
  • Let Us Bring the Food to You! That’s right, in addition to our always available curbside pick-up menu (which has some AMAZING comfort style dishes of its very own), we’ll deliver hot items right your door within an hour’s drive of our commissary in Pawtucket. Be on the lookout for our big white truck with the lobster on it!
